xdvi/gs on linux-athena.dvi loses

When I run xdvi on linux-athena.dvi in /afs/sipb/project/doc, I get the error:
gs: gs: Malformed ghostview color property.
and the cover page does not display (athough the rest of the document
appears eventually.)
I am running xdvi from /mit/sipb and gs from /mit/outland. The funny
thing about this is that if I run gs manually on the funky-owl.PS
insert, it doesn't have a problem.
