I doubt that's the reason for the fault (I have that too)
but:
Is /tmp on a filesystem that does not support hard links?
Is /tmp full or non-existent?
finally, if it keeps happening... try using xv (in your mailcap)
add the line
image/*; xv %s;
to your ~/.mailcap
and see if that fixes stuff...
