I want to encourage people to use WAIS to access the NSF
publications, and Mosaic to access wais. This was working nicely for
me a week or two ago, but not now. The problems:
1 problem (bug?)) Today and yesterday, URLs like
'wais://cnidr.org:210/directory-of-servers?' and
'wais://stis.nsf.gov:210/nsf-pubs' aren't working. Reading fast and
pressing 'reload' shows that it connects to
'http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu:8001/', 'strings' shows that string in the
Mosaic binary. But 8001 doesn't respond. Looks like it's moved to
port 80.
Is ncsa just losing, or does Mosaic 2.1 need to be recompiled, or what?
2 bug) 2.2 bug (noted in the latest "Help On Mosaic Version 2.2" known bugs):
Mosaic 2.2 clients that have NOT been compiled with direct WAIS enabled
will core dump if given a direct wais URL
I think I'm seeing that.
3 suggestion)
Can direct WAIS be compiled into the next Mosaic or Mosaic-BETA?
or if I had an HP or Athena Dec or Sun, could I provide a server to
replace whatever www.ncsa.uiuc.edu does? (I have a plexus server of
my own)
Thanks,
Craig
