Yes, xscreensaver is linked against R5, but R5 isn't monolithic --
there have been over 20 patches to it since it came out, and that
includes a number of Xt patches. I doubt the xscreensaver that's
currently installed was linked against an incredibly recent version of
R5.
I have tried to find this bug before, working under the assumption
that you postulated that an extra timer is being set somewhere, but I
couldn't come up with it. I can't figure out a way to duplicate the
problem, so I was left with reading the code to figure out what was
going wrong, and I couldn't figure it out.
If you can figure out how to duplicate the problem, let me know.
Otherwise, I'll try to work on it more when I get a chance, but I
suspect that that's not going to be for quite a while.
