One possibility is to use the idraw program instead of xfig. It
hardly ever coredumps, and is in general much more pleasant to use. It
only outputs postscript, however, although is usually isn't a problem,
since you can include a postscript file into a latex document.
Idraw is in the sipb filesystem, but it is currently only compiled for
vax systems. It's use is fairly self-explanatory.
