the DVIPS installed at Berkeley will generate needed fonts, and put them
in /tmp/TeXPK. This lets users generate fonts they need, without having
to give them write access to the normal fontdirs.
[Of course the font path for dvips is appropriately modified; also, if
disk space is available, it would of course be better to build the fonts
in the permanent directory]
