What your doing sounds correct in general, and should work if you got
all the details correct. When the server is talking to nemacs
properly, hitting the spacebar should allow you to go through the
available kana-kanji conversions.
You should be starting egg-mode using "C-\" (control-backslash), which
also puts an indicator up on your modeline if you have the default
modeline active. Then, when you initiate a conversion for the first
time (by typing in some hiragana then hitting the spacebar), nemacs
will start a subprocess to talk with wnn (jserver).
If you didn't get any messages from nemacs that it was starting to
talk with your jserver, then the required process hasn't been created
and conversion won't work.

I don't know about this other tutorial you mention, but would be happy
to look into it if you know where it might be found...
BTW, you (and all other /mit/nihongo) users are welcome to add
yourself/ves to the nihongo mailing list on Athena (using blanche, for
example). This list goes out to many of the locker's users, and many
questions may be answered there.
