just so you know, Ted and I have determined that edsc is never masking
SIGPIPE, but that it is being set to SIGIGN by something in the
standard (7.4B) login process (xdm, xinit, or something).
Actually, edsc is masking SIGPIPE, but the version in /usr/sipb/vaxbin
is very much out of date. It needs to be replaced with a more
up-to-date version.
I have let the release engineering team know about the SIGPIPE problem,
and it _may_ be fixed in a future (7.4x) release.
