just so you know, Ted and I have determined that edsc is never masking
SIGPIPE, but that it is being set to SIGIGN by something in the
standard (7.4B) login process (xdm, xinit, or something). Whatever is
setting it does not occur during rlogin, so when a machine is
rejecting connections, you can lose edsc altogether from rlogin (and
possibly from dialup?)
The fix is for (1) edsc to mask sigpipe explicitly (2)
whatever is in the release that is hiding it to be fixed.
