I *definitely* think you want to run MIT's X instead of NeWS :-).
Besides that, I doubt we're going to be able to help you much.... none
of us (that I know of) have had much experience compiling Xaw
applications under NeWS, and besides that, some of your problems may
(as you point out) be due to the old X code that Sun provides, and may
therefore not be fixable by anything sort of getting and installing
the MIT X distribution.
You'll probably want to wait until R5's public release, though....
