I think there's a bug in the code that does the definition lookup,
rather than a bug in makeindex.c, because makeindex.c appears to be
doing the right thing. However, the server code that does the looup
and formatting is so hairy that I don't intend to try to fix it. If I
ever get around to finishing my new client/server, or if we ever get
around to setting up the NeXT as a dictionary server, the problem
should go away; otherwise, anybody else wanna take a look at this
problem? :-)

You're the webster maintainer, correct? For some reason, "webster tick"
returns only a cross-reference and one full definition, when in fact the
dictionary entries include several other definitions. Same is true in
interactive mode.

(What led me to that was the use of "backtick" in man perl--a usage I
hadn't come across before. I've used both "backquote" and "tick mark",
but "backtick" sounds more like an invitation to Lyme disease. Anyway,
I was surprised not to find the meaning for "tick mark" in the webster
output.)

Sorry about the unintentional pun of my subject line--I just noticed it.
