When xrn starts and there is an empty .newsrc file, xrn promptly exits
with an error ".newsrc is zero length, aborting"

This is not a bug, it's a feature. If your .newsrc is empty, xrn
believes that it was probably corrupted due to quota problems or
something else, and does not take the chance of running, because then
it would erase .oldnewsrc and possibly remove all chance of recovering
from the corruption.

If your .newsrc is supposed to be empty, then presumably you want it
recreated. In that case, delete it.
