This doesn't even address the issue of trying to preview with
xdvi. xdvi attempts to make the substitution and then dies
because some character (so far, I've gotten 170, and I think
174) is not defined in the cmr font. It would be nice to be
able to preview documents set in those fonts so that line and
page breaks could be checked before printing them out. (Of
cousre, it won't fix the problem of omitted characters beacuse
the cmr font is being substituted anyway...)
