I'll leave it to others to decribe usenet (rn, etc.) in more detail,
but you might be interested a paper we wrote for the Winter 89 Usenix
which describes the SIPB's "discuss" conferencing system. It goes
into a bit about different kinds of computer communication, including
BBoards and conferencing, and then talks about the features we felt
were important for a conferencing system in a distrubted computing
environment. It does talk about usenet.
You can get at a postscript printable version of the paper as
/mit/discuss/doc/usenix/discuss.PS after doing an "attach discuss" ...
I'd be interested in seeing your paper when you're done.
