The check-box on the 'auto lock' entry in the menu overlaps the A in
Auto, and itself is only half-visible. This is with a 6x10 font for the
entries.
see ~jtkohl/.Xresources if it makes a difference (I ran the program with
argv[0] == 'xscreensaver' so the old resources should still work).

You were probably running the new version directly out of
/afs/.athena/contrib/sipb, and you didn't have it attached as
/usr/sipb, so new-xscreensaver couldn't find its app-defaults file.
Try again tomorrow, after the volume release.
