Hi Susan,
Unfortunately it is not trivial to create a build of gaim for Windows -
in particular, we don't have the tools needed from Microsoft to do this.
There are a number of options available for more efficient zephyr on
Windows:
MIT offers WinZephyr, which is a standalone Windows zephyr client.

You can install X-Win32 on your Windows machine, available from MIT at
no charge, and run zwgc (the graphical Zephyr client) as you would on an
Athena workstation.
You can open multiple SSH sessions to Athena and run a Zephyr client in
a separate session from the one you're working in so that your zephyrs
don't interrupt your work.
