Could you cc bug-im next time? It'll make it easier to for me to look
through it, since it also gets piped to a couple of archives?

The error messages you sent made it easy to track down the problem.

It appears that glib (the platform-independent library used by gtk,
used by gaim), is broken. More specifically, g_file_test() which tests
existence of files, reports files on AFS filesystems as unreadable,
when in fact they are. When I'm sure of this, I'll submit a bug
report. It might take time for a patch to trickle down and appear in
the athena release, but maybe a week from now, I'll write up some sort
of a local hack, that fixes it for gaim.
