Problem with gaim

Hi. I recently started using gaim and I'm having problems when someone sends me
a message. When I receive the message, I only see boxes as the text that they
wrote. I have to copy and paste the "text" to another window, such as emacs or
xterm, where I can actually see what was written. I've tried looking for
changing the font or something that might solve the problem, but I haven't found
anything. Is there a way to solve this?
