I've confirmed enough interest that I think it makes sense to do it. For
start time, I probably can't easily get to the office before 12:30 or so on
Saturday.
Here's a draft email:
"""
There will be a hackathon at the SIPB office this Saturday, August 5,
starting at about 1PM and going until late. We'll order pizza or something
around dinnertime. We'll be hacking on various group chat things:
* Zulip (https://zulip.org/ and https://github.com/zulip/zulip/). These
days, we're the leading open source group chat by any measure of
contributor activity, with hundreds of contributors all over the world.
* Barnowl (https://barnowl.mit.edu/), merging old PRs and trying to merge
Adam Glasgall's Zulip integration into master.
* Snipe (https://github.com/kcr/snipe).
Experts on each of these projects will be there. Below is a bunch of
detail on Zulip.
For those of you who don't know me, I was SIPB Chair back in 2006, and one
of the creators of Debathena, XVM, Cluedumps, SIPB Hackathons, and lots of
other fun SIPB projects. These days, I am the lead developer of Zulip and
run the zulipchat.com startup (fellow former SIPB chair Greg Price is also
on the team).
Come join us if you'd like to:
* Get involved in major open source project with MIT roots (Zulip was
inspired by Zephyr's threading model)!
* Improve the Zulip/Zephyr experience. We'll likely discuss major changes
to the Zulip/Zephyr integration experience like enabling presence in the
Zephyr Zulip instance.
* Hang out with a bunch of cool people making awesome open source group
chat software!
* Chat about what it's like running a major open source project that merges
hundreds of commits every week.
If you're interested in hacking on Zulip, you may want to check out
our developer
documentation <https://zulip.readthedocs.io/en/latest/readme-symlink.html> and
setup a development environment in advance, to make the most of your time
in person.
All experience levels welcome! We'll come prepared with a bunch of
bite-size issues accessible to developers new to open source as well as
more thorny projects for more experienced developers. Right now, we have a
few exciting areas where we'd especially appreciate the perspective of new
contributors.
See you there!
