Hi printers et al,

First, we had a lot of problems getting the Reg Day Card locked up and
printed this term. I just sent several messages to the other press
ops who worked on this job about the problems. I also sent them to
the apo-printshop Discuss Archive:

    http://diswww.mit.edu/charon/apo-printshop/

See msgs 79 to 82. They contain a lot of tips on how to make lockup
easier. Msgs 66, 71, 74, and 75 are also about this job.

Second, please do not use rubber bands or tape to store blocks of type
in the galley trays. Please use twine or string instead. There is a
spool of twine in a wire cage on the side of the cabinet the galleys
and card stock is kept in against the radiators.

If anyone want a quick lesson in how to tie a block of type, please
ask me. I'm willing to set a time to come to the APOffice and show
each of you.

I have removed the rubber bands from the shop.

Why? Tape, especially duct or adhesive tape will leave a residue on
the sides of the type. This residue makes locking the type up
impossible. It just took me 20 minutes to clean 10 pieces of 8pt
type, so they can be used again.

Why? The rubber bands become brittle and break in a few months. This
causes type blocks to spill over and become mixed up (aka "pied"),
which makes sorting them back into the type cases take longer. It
also increases the chance that the type will be scratched.

Ten months ago, I went through all the galleys and replaced the rubber
bands, which were all broken. Those rubber bands are now all brittle
and broken, so I'm switching the blocks to twine.

If any of you want to use a rubber band, then use twine over it, that
would work.

When I am done securing the saved blocks a second time, I'll go back
to sorting most of them back into the type cases. Others are also
welcome to do this. The jobs to save, have yellow tags with them.
