Alternatively, granite surface plates are available at a reasonable 
price. Woodcraft currently shows a 12"x18"x3" plate, claimed 
interferometry-flat to .00005", for under $80 (plus, admittedly, $50 
shipping cost if you don't pick it up in the store, and whatever tax is 
appropriate). I'm sure larger sizes are available from other sources 
though cost is likely to go up faster than surface area if you want to 
maintain that same flatness. (Then again, I suspect that this precision 
is overkill for our application, so we might be able to trade that off 
against area.)
