Experiment with nontraditional woodcut techniques that yield contemporary, expressive results. Building a vocabulary of marks with carving tools on several wood blocks, participants will create matrices of information to be used in conjunction with one other, or with already existing plates or prints . A dialogue occurs between the carving and printing processes as layers of colored inks of varying degrees of transparency are printed and overprinted with carved blocks, stencils and perhaps further enhanced with printed elements of chine colle'. This is an innovative way of approaching wood block printmaking that can have the immediacy of collage ,yet with the possibility of multiples , working in series, or in variations on themes for which printmaking is renown.

Registration techniques for multiples, printing by hand, chine colle', tool sharpening , ink modification, work with stencils and masks, carving techniques and techniques for transferring imagery onto woodblocks will be demonstrated.

For continuing students further topics can include : shaped wood blocks, working in larger formats , combining woodcut with pronto plates and a variety of stencil and masking techniques.
