Minutes of the APO Chapter Meeting of 09/20/2006

The meeting was called to order at 7:09 PM by riv.

In attendance were
Actives: riv, holmesmd, austein, hopp, dsheets, jamwno, kchen,
		bpepper, alexmv, iduke, nlharr, aguerra
	Pledges: zev
	Other Brothers: mitchb, ccrazy, Joni

SVP's Report:
iduke: The next project we have is not this weekend, but the
following weekend, with Bread and Jam on October 1. I
		don't have a PC yet. I don't know if we'll have
pledges in time to poke them.

hopp: We'll totally have pledges by then.

iduke: You cook food and serve it to the homeless or
disadvantaged. We'll have two shifts, and it's ok to
come from one or the other if you can't come for the
whole thing. Cooking: 2-5, serving 5-7 PM.

riv: I think it's a bad idea for a pledge's first project to
		be one that they PC.

mitchb: It's like course 6; it's a weedout project. Unless
someone has been forwarding them mail, The
		pledges-to-be aren't getting apo-news.

hopp: I've been telling them stuff, but I forgot to tell them
		about the meeting.

iduke: October 6-7 is Chapter Weekend. I have a
transportation sub-PC, but no overall PC yet.

	jamwno: Resolute or somewhere else?

iduke: Somewhere else. I have some papers in my backpack
about it. I think those are the two things that
should happen soon. We have people working on UMOC,
though that's still pretty far in advance.

austein: Have we reserved booths for it yet?

iduke: I think it was done at the beginning of term -- I was
		told that it was done.

	kchen: cac-ems.mit.edu might have it.

MVP's Report:

hopp: We have only three people who are actually pledging. We
have three new ones, and four that are continuing, and
this transfer thing that I need to figure out how to
do. vinayak, a grad student David, TB, and Lisa are
the pledges-to-be. Friday at 7 PM, if that's not
		terribly OMG for almost everyone.

	austein: That is Rosh Hashanah. I won't be here -- I don't
		know about anyone else.

jamwno: Can we get an advisor?

ccrazy: I won't be there; I'll be in New York.

hopp: I can try to move it. I'll ask them what they think.

riv: Think about it. Send out mail tomorrow at the latest.

FVP's Report:

holmesmd: I still need a PC for Steak Fry, which is the second
		weekend of October (October 8).

iduke: It's the day after we get back from Chapter Weekend.

mitchb: If you want jweiss to cook, we should give him more
notice than the two days we did last time.

holmesmd: Matt has volunteered to run a study break.

riv: Is it the meet the pledges thing?

mitchb: We could have a we survived the bookex study break
		study break.

austein: We do sort of need PAM.

alexmv: PAM is tentatively scheduled for October 4, two weeks
		for today.

hopp: (to austein) That's up to you and Sarah to discuss.

Treasurer's Report:

	FILL IN HERE

riv: Big Screw is going to be written its check a term late.

riv: Has anyone not filled out a brotherhood requirements
		form? <several people raise hands>

AC's Report:

riv: Greg is not here yet. He might be on his way, he might
		be a good person.

Publications Report:

	riv: Brian, what's up?

	bpepper: Quantum

riv: Is it up, or is it strange?

	bpepper: <holds up textbook>

APOCed's Report:

riv: Sheets, have anything to report? Like the articles
		people should be writing?

dsheets: I didn't write anything or print anything.

riv: (whispers) because people should send you articles!

dsheets: Because people should send me articles! Two weeks
from now, you'll have an APOC with articles written by
		you.

riv: If anyone is PC'ing something, it's your job to write an
article or delegate someone to write it.

Office Cleaning Report:

jessiehl: There was one time not too long ago when I made a
half-hearted attempt to clean the office, which
resulted in some things getting straightened up. I'll
make a more thorough attempt soon.

mitchb: The air conditioner was making noise. I took some
parts about it. It stopped making noise.

alexmv: It was making noise when I was in the office today,
		half an hour ago.

dsheets: I kicked it a few times, and it stopped making noise.
I just kept kicking it; it seemed to work.

Historian's Report:

austein: Sarah has a camera. We're going to take pictures. I
have to talk to Alex about Bertucci's about the roll,
or whatever it is. We don't have it from last term.

mitchb: Is this master of Bertucci's or something?

Advisor's Report:

ccrazy: I picked up a present for the chapter <holds up
X-Machina card game>. It is a cross between Rube
Goldberg and Apples and Apples. It plays like Apples
to Apples in that you have somebody who is judging the
round, and people have to convince the judge that
their product is best. Each person has a pile of
parts to build an object that they convinve the judge
		that he needs.

ccrazy: One of our other advisors, Yale Sussman, is around.
He's doing Book Exchange pickup right now.

Chairman's Report:

riv: People should PC things, since things don't happen unless
we make them happen. Think about what project you're
PC'ing this term because this brotherhood form says
		you're PC'ing one project.

Committees:

riv: Anyone have anything to say about bookex?

	mitchb: We survived.

nlharr: Brian is all that is man.

bpepper: It was very impressive to hold all of those checks in
my hand and to go like <moves hand from stack of
		imaginary checks to pocket>.

riv: Silkscreening has a couple of small projects for outside
projects, and a new chair, Angela, and I'll be
transitioning her while doing these projects.

Old Business:

riv: So there was motion that we tabled until this week to
think about, namely, the budget, but the treasurer is
unable to make it this week, and has not done a
		budget.

riv: I'd entertain a motion to re-table the budget.

	<motion passes by white-ballot>

mitchb: Can we just pre-approve the lie? Does it matter?

mitchb: I think we have some people to install.

riv: Hey Ellen, want to install some people? Do we have to
		reinstall Sheets?

dsheets: I have to be shutdown, unplugged, rebooted, replugged?

	bpepper: ./configure; make; make install

riv: You, and you, and you -- you get to be installed.

hopp: Can we mount them instead?

dsheets: Oh, I have to move?

<installation ceremony proceeds, and is performed by ccrazy,
jessiehl as Office Manager, austein as Historian, and
		dsheets as APOCed>

dsheets: (to austein) You have to deal with the archive? HA!

austein: I get an archive committee? I'm appointing you to
		deal with the archive committee.

iduke: We went to the braille press. I got a thank you note.
We also went to the food bank.

jamwno: We fed a lot of people. I would have the thank you
note, but I wrote down directions, and who knows where
		that sheet of paper is.

riv: You're going to write an APOC article, right?

	jamwno: I wrote one already.

holmesmd: OK. So nationals is coming up. That means there
are registration dates and stuff. If you're going to
nationsls or thinking about it, you should write your
name on this sheet of paper. It starts December 27.
		Ellen!

ccrazy: It's the 27th, the middle of the day, through the
evening of December 30. It's in Louisville, KY.

riv: For those who haven't been to nationals, what's it like?

jamwno: There are all the chapters there, about 350 active
		ones.

mitchb: You can write legislation, and have Jim smash your
		dreams.

jamwno: You can sit on a committee, and there are about
		10ish...

	ccrazy: 15

jamwno: I'm within an order of magnitude. There are
workshops, LEADS, probably all of them except for
		Serve.

riv: We have two suites, which is room for 10 people. We can
get more space if we need.

jamwno: There are two banquets, they're nifty. There's a
professional choir that sings the toast song. When
everyone is in the fellowship circle, then there are
regional sillyisms. MMA will do their
		buh-buh-bum-bum, we'll sing off key...

mitchb: buh-buh-bum-bum? They've changed it from Abort,
		Abort, Abort?

jamwno: That's during dinner. It's awesome and fun. Two
brothers from the chapter need to be elected to be the
representatives. They sit at the table and listen to
the legislation. Some of it's interesting...

mitchb: Some of it Jim kills...

holmesmd: I actually have to leave in about 30 seconds. There
was a small amount of talk of caravaning from Boston
		to Louisville...

mitchb: I don't want to go by horseback...

riv: The sooner we can arrange transportation, the cheaper we
		can get plane tickets.

ccrazy: Ideally, Maryland would like the name of the voting
		delegates by October 15?

jamwno: That means we have to elect people at the chapter two
		weeks from now?

holmesmd: If you're interested in being a voting delegate, you
		should also talk to me.

Joni: If anyone's planning to write legislation for nationals,
that's due by the end of this month, September 30.

	mitchb: And don't tell Jim!

New Business:

riv: There's apparently something about advisory approvals.
Does anyone have a list of our current advisors?

	Joni: I have a list.

ccrazy: Oh, you have the packet that's actually incorrect, but
I know what's missing. At the beginning of every fall
semester, each advisor is approved or not, as the
chapter sees fit. (looks at sheet) Lori's still not
		on it.

riv: Is she the only person missing?

alexmv: Do you want the full list? I have the full list here.
(starts to write list on board)

jamwno: Did Sue Coney get added?

ccrazy: Sue is on here. We should get this straightened out.
The easiest way is probably to go through the
		paperwork again.

Joni: Isn't it included in the November 15 forms?

ccrazy: No, you don't need to submit new forms.

riv: So something that hasn't happened yet that should have is
talking to each of this people. If people think that
they don't know who we are, someone should talk to
		them.

austein: For those of us who haven't met these people...

mitchb: That's not just "those of us", there are a lot of
people who haven't met any of us.

austein: So riv! Who are these people?

riv: So stop me if I'm wrong... shh! So there are these
people... (explains who the advisors listed on the
		board are)

riv: So what's the process on this Ellen?

ccrazy: The proces on this is whatever people want to do --
you can approve it indivdually, or as a
		group...

riv: Hey Ellen... want to be chair of the advisor committee?

	ccrazy: Sure.

riv: Since we have all these names up here, can we put up an,
I don't know, a symbol next to them so people can talk
to them to see if they're still interested? Hey
Ellen, any names that you think we need to remind them
to see if they still exist?

ccrazy: Larry. Even though we don't see people like David,
he's communicative. If we invite him to something, he
calls the office and RSVP's no. If people have
contact with these people in classes, that's sort of
helpful. It would be nice to talk to everyone at
least a little bit more, maybe get them to write APOc
articles. It's been successful in the class.

alexmv: Just to make it clear, I feel a little bit weird
talking to my dad about APO.

ccrazy: We should bring Alex's dad to an initiation ceremony.
It is not required, but it's recommmended.

alexmv: My impression is that if he were more involved with
doing things, he would feel less weird about going
		through initiation.

mitchb: Is there actually stuff that the people we don't
actually see that people do for you, Ellen?

ccrazy: They're in the background until we wake them up. The
last time we had Conclave on campus, I talked to some
		of them.

riv: I will either poke them myself or find other people to.

ccrazy: They also are potentially useful on a personal level.
You've got that connection with these individuals, you
have APO in commonm. If you have questions, on the
academic side of the institute, they are another
resource for you at that level too.

riv: Does anyone object to approving this list as it is?

	<advisor list approved, many-none>

dsheets: Have you made notes in the minutes that the other
		person is taking minutes?

	hopp: When are people available?

riv: When are people who are busy on Friday not busy?

hopp: There's another holiday on Monday that I don't
		recognize.

	many: That's a suicide day.

mitchb: I think there's only one suicide day per year.

austein: It's also convenient if you're celebrating Rosh
		Hashanah.

	hopp: So is Monday ok?

	austein: What time?

hopp: There's a leadership thing all day, but I can quit that.

	austein: 7 o'clock?

hopp: I'll have to ask the pledges.

riv: You should maybe send mail to apo-brothers or something,
to see if there's anything lots of brothers are doing,
and see if all the officers can come, or most of the
		officers.

Other:

riv: Any announcements that haven't already been announced?

Other Other:

riv: These people want their room, so we should give it to
them. So this meeting should be over.

jamwno: I move for the meeting to be over, fellowship circle.

dsheets: I move for this meeting to be over.

	<white-ballot!>

The meeting was adjourned at 7:58:34.

	<dsheets drones single note>
	<mitchb hits dsheets, dsheets stops>
mitchb: Maybe if I keep removing parts from him, he'll get
		better.

The fellowship circle was adjourned at 8:00:14.
