I just wanted to remind everyone that there will be a blood drive at
MIT next week. If you didn't make an appointment earlier, because you
were waiting to know what your class schedule was going to be, now
would be an excellent time to make that appointment (though walk-ins
are accepted). There is a need for all types of blood, but right now
A-, B-, O-, and O+ are in particularly short supply. Please take the
time to donate and save a life.

Executive Summary: There will be a blood drive at MIT from Monday,
September 18, through Friday, September 22, in La Sala in the Student
Center. The drive will run from noon to 6pm on Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Friday; and from 8am to 2pm on Thursday. Please use
http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/ to make an appointment for faster
service. All donors will receive a free "Starve a Mosquito" t-shirt.

Hello,

Please allow me to begin by thanking everyone who made our July drive
a success. We collected over 300 pints of blood. On behalf of the Red
Cross, thank you for saving lives.

The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at MIT from Monday,
September 18 through Friday, September 22, in La Sala in the Student
Center (W20). The drive will run from noon to 6pm on Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Friday; and from 8am to 2pm on Thursday. By giving
blood, or volunteering your time at the blood drive, you can help save
lives.

We'd like to see as many new members of the MIT community as possible.
Please consider bringing a new friend along when you come in to
donate. Everyone who donates or volunteers at the drive will receive
a free "Starve a Msoquito...Donate Blood" t-shirt.

The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To
make an appointment, fill out the form at:

	http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/

If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
drive and donate anyway.

We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're welcome to
donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
shortly before the drive starts.

Blood Donation Factoids:

  * Be sure to eat! Don't skip breakfast or lunch on the day of your
blood donation. Your body will need extra energy to donate a pint of
blood. You will also feel better after donating if you have eaten a
    meal a few hours before.

  * Red blood cells last 42 days, plasma is good for up to one year, and
    platelets only 5 days.

If you want to forward this message, feel free as long as you are
sending it to a friend, or to a list for which it is appropriate. In
other words, feel free to forward, but please don't spam people on our
behalf. If anyone wants to get on our mailing list they can check the
appropriate box when making an appointment, or fill out the form at
http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/email.html
