Brothers and pledges!
You have given your sweat, your time, your sanity, your tears to this
great Institute, but it demands more! The greatest sacrifice (short
of your life, your children, or your limbs), is your blood! And for
this, there is a blood drive coming up (see below). If the good karma
associated with helping save a person's life is not enough for you,
there are prizes awarded to the group that donates the most blood. I
propose that all interested brothers donate blood in the name of
Alpha Phi Omega, and maybe we'll get something, but really, just
please donate blood.
For those of you who haven't give blood before, it's not that bad!
Sure there's some pain involved in having your skin penetrated by a
hollow metal rod, but don't be a sissy. You'll live, and so will someone else.
If you intend to give blood, I highly recommend making an appointment
on the MIT Blood Drive website, which makes the whole process go a
lot smoother. It's also more relaxing to go with a friend, so give
that a try if you're nervous. And feel free to mail me with any questions too.
Hope you decide to give blood!
yilfs,
vlad
>Executive Summary: There will be a blood drive at MIT from Monday,
>February 27 through Thursday, March 2, in La Sala in the Student
>Center. The drive will run from noon to 6pm on Monday, Wednesday, and
>Thursday; and from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday. Please use
>http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/ to make an appointment for faster
>service. All donors will receive a complimentary gift certificate for
>free ice cream at Brigham's. There will also be a contest for the
>living group that brings in the most donors.
>
>
>Hello,
>
>Please allow me to begin by thanking everyone who made our November
>drive a success. We collected 249 usable pints of blood. On behalf
>of the Red Cross, thank you for saving lives.
>
>The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at MIT from Monday,
>February 27 through Thursday, March 2, in La Sala in the Student
>Center (W20). The drive will run from noon to 6pm on Monday,
>Wednesday, and Thursday; and from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday. By giving
>blood, or volunteering your time at the blood drive, you can help save
>lives.
>
>For the February/March drive we will be having 'Blood Wars', a
>competition between living groups. Whichever living group in each
>category donates the most blood per capita will win a bundle of
>prizes. The three categories are Frats/ILGs, Sororities, and Dorms.
>Prizes include cash, Xbox games and concert tickets.
>
>The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
>provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
>and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
>what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To
>make an appointment, fill out the form at:
>
> http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/
>
>If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
>drive and donate anyway.
>
>We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
>people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
>Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're welcome to
>donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
>volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
>and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
>necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
>drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
>blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
>shortly before the drive starts.
>
>Blood Donation Factoids:
>
> * Drink extra fluids before your donation. You can begin to drink extra
> fluids the day before your donation. Water and juices are great, but
> try to avoid a lot of caffeine.
>
> * One unit of blood can be separated into components (red cells,
> platelets and plasma) and used to treat up to three patients.
