-------------------------- BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE -----------------

At the Section 62/64 Sectionals this weekend it was announced that Earle
M. Herbert is very ill. This news was reported on APOSOC-L mailing list,
but not on APO-L. I went to back posts on APOSOC-L (which I don't read)
and found the attached posts about his condition, including one which
was a forward of mail from Jack McKenzie, a member of the National Board
of Directors.

Earle is especially interested in hearing from his pledge classes,
especially about their continuing projects in his area of focus.

Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers,
Debbie

Brothers and Pledges:

National President Jerry Schroeder just called to let Gamma Lambda know
that
Earle Herbert has taken a turn for the worse. He now is homebound, is
not
eating solid foods, is receiving nourisment intravenously, and has
dropped to
about 130 pounds. On "bad days" he sometimes does not recognize people,
although on "good days" he is quite alert and lucid.

There is nothing in particular that we can do to help Earle. His family,
friends and APO Brothers in California are caring for him. Being aware
of our
special relationship with Earle, Jerry just wanted us to know how things
stand.
Probably the best thing we can do for Earle is to remember him in our
thoughts
and prayers and to try even harder to practice the Principles of
Leadership,
Friendship and Service as Earle has done so well for so long.

Fraternally,
Jack McKenzie

In response to everyone about Earle, he has been HIV+ for a while
now... he and Gerald Schroeder visited the Clemson campus last year
around this time. Earle was then on AZT, a very toxic drug used to
fight off the AIDS virus and prolong life. My pledge class held a
dinner with Earle; it was the first time I've ever knew anyone that
was HIV+... the weekend he was here is remembered dearly by my
chapter. There is not much that can be done now; I know that he is
in California with his family. He has trouble recognizing people in
his "bad" lapses, but is pretty lucid otherwise. He no longer can
eat solid foods, so he is constantly fed intravenously.
I will work on perhaps getting his home address... he gave me a
business card with his address (I believe). I'll check for certain
if it is correct... here it is:
--
                 Earle M. Herbert
                 P.O. Box 25043
                 Los Angeles, CA 90025
--
I'm positive that my chapter will positively vote upon
sending Earle a correspondence (at least). I encourage all chapters
to consider doing so.
I remember Earle saying to our pledge class, "Brothers, be
careful." -- These three words mean a lot for numerous reasons...
Earle knows his situation. More than anything else, he wouldn't
want it to happen to anyone else. I took it upon myself to get
tested for HIV every six months for the rest of my life not because
I feel that I'm at risk, but I feel everyone is at risk.
I will welcome any ideas out there about what APOSOC can do...
I'm not certain if there is an e-mail address to Earle, but I can
look into it.
