Subject: Volunteers needed for 5/5/01
Dear APO members:
I am writing to ask for your help with the upcoming Wake Up the Earth
Festival in Jamaica Plain. This event will happen along the southwest
corridor right outside the Stonybrook T-station on the orange line
(very convenient!)I spoke to Ian today and he suggested sending an
email with some of the project details.
We can use any help that you are able to provide between 10am-6:30 on
Saturday May 5th. We need between 10-15 volunteers to help us make
recycling work at the festival- so when the Earth does Wake Up, she
won't be pissed that everything went in the trash!
Examples of Volunteer work include:
- monitoring a trash/recycling station and talking with festival goers
about where to put cans & bottles,
- collecting unwanted papers (most of them just received from an info
both) and returning them to the appropriate people
- collecting recycling as the bins fill up
- communicating with vendors about what to do with their cardboard/
helping them flatten it
- gathering recyclables at the end of the festival (you get to use a
little red wagon)
- enjoying the great music, skits, drumming and festival fare!

Background:
Wake Up the Earth is organized by Spontaneous Celebrations.
They are a registered 501c3 organization. It is a celebration of
community, culture and the environment. It is held on or near May 1
which is when most of the rest of the world celebrates labor day.
Any money generated goes to support the work of Spontaneous, which
includes after schools programs for children. For the past two
years the Jamaica Plain Recycling Initiative has managed the
recycling for the festival.
The JP Recycling Initiative, is a grassroots group with the mission of
minimizing trash in Jamaica Plain. We are all volunteers and not a
registered non-profit
