   This is a very good question. Besides the whole gravity problem, it's
   clear that the top of the fridge fills up much faster than it is emptied.
   (Which means that chances are some people are just throwing away the
   recyclable glass since they can't find a spot for it.)

   Maybe a bin of some sort? 

If you send mail to recycling@mit.edu, they might be willing to
provide a bin like those that appeared aroud campus a while ago.
