Minutes of MemComm, January 25, 2000

Administrative notes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Start:  7:30 pm; End:  7:54 pm Present:  Alan, Eric, Jake, Carolyn,
Laura, Ian, Ann Marie, David McIlroy, Ellen
Membership Requirements:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MVP (Ann Marie): The pledge requirements are identical to that of
       fall 1999. Pledges have no time requirement specification. One
       change is for brothers_they would be asked to attend "at least
       6 service projects or 20 hours of service." I'm not sure about
       the wording though.

Carolyn: Perhaps remove the "or"?

MVP (Ann Marie): Okay, it will be "at least 6 service projects/20
       hours of service." How about fellowship events? We will change
       the requirement to three for brothers. Do we want to keep the
       requirement of brothers to attend all ceremonies and rituals?

Carolyn: We want to encourage people to come; I suggest we keep it.

MVP (Ann Marie): We will cut line encouraging people to help the
       Contact Chair [given experience from last term].

Pledge Meetings:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MVP (Ann Marie): I talked to Ellen about pledge meetings, and I
       want to make them more structured. The first one will be an ice
       breaker for the pledges.  The subsequent ones will be [alumna]
       mrn's talk about national and chapter history; Sam's guide to
       PC'ing an event; Ari and Oscar's presentation on the Robert's
       Rules of Order; and an alum story time meeting.
Big/Little Program:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MVP (Ann Marie): I would like to revive the Big/Little program.
       I am also changing the way we get big/little pairs. There are
       forms for bigs to fill out, and the pledges will go through and
       put smiley faces next to the ones they'd like. Then the MVP
       will assign the pairings.

Jake: There should be no harm in actually meeting brothers.

MVP (Ann Marie): That is true, and this shouldn't stop them from
       doing so, but there are some people intimidated by the process
       of meeting brothers.

Carolyn: How about a system of smiley, normal, and frowny faces?
       That way pledges can also express displeasure with a certain
       choice.

MVP (Ann Marie): Okay. Some one suggested also (I think at
       Afterfinals) a Big/Little Talent Show...

Laura: I'm busy that night.

MVP (Ann Marie): ...also known as the Big/Little Stage Fright
       Night. It might happen, and would be a start to strengthening
       the Big/Little program. Any more suggestions?

Carolyn: Bigs should take littles out to dinner. Is there any way to
       enforce that?

Alan: How about a guide to how to be a big?

Eric: Here's a problem: as long as you have a guide, it's okay, but you
       get what you put in. If you force things, the end result may not
       necessarily be quality time.

Carolyn: Every pledge should have two people they can talk to for
       problems, advice, etc. Their big is a more personal contact
       point, since the MVP may not be able to focus on every pledge.

MVP (Ann Marie): How about a Do-something-nice-for-littles-day?
       Perhaps advertised through the list apo-big-brothers?

More Discussion:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MVP (Ann Marie): Membership retention seems to have been the
       task of the Fellowship Vice President, so I guess Foley will take
       on that. At this point we have positive growth in the member-
       ship.
President (Carolyn): We should be careful though, and watch out
       for last term's pledge class, and get them to stick around. Also,
       should we start making a list of people interested in pledging?
MVP (Ann Marie):  It's okay, it seems like we may already have
       more than ten pledges. Maybe later?
Pledge Manuals:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alan: Do the new brothers have any suggestions about the pledge
       manual?

Carolyn: Perhaps we should make sure that the pledges read it? Some
       stuff in there (e.g. Athena instance) are quite useful.

MVP (Ann Marie): I'll do that. I'll tell people to read it before
       certain meetings.

Announcements:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ann Marie: I love Katherine Reid [for volunteering to be PubDir for
       a week].
MVP (Ann Marie): Tomorrow there's an open meeting at 5:30 pm.
       I will provide cookies, milk, and Hershey's kisses. CAC changed
       rooms on us, so it will happen in PDRs 1 and 2 instead of West
       Lounge.  Instead of spamming apo-prospectives, a brother
       will be stationed near West Lounge, and signs will be posted to
       tell people to go to the PDRs.
