As an update, the need for blood has gotten worse since last week...

The American Red Cross is now reporting an emergency blood shortage:

"Blood donations are currently being distributed to hospitals faster
than they are coming in, and more donations are needed now to
prevent delays in urgent medical care to the most vulnerable
  patients."

The MIT blood drive runs through Friday 1pm-6pm each day.

Thank you for helping to save lives.

Hello,

MIT's summer blood drive will be Monday 7/9 through Friday 7/12. As
usual, the drive will be held in La Sala in the Student Center. The
drive will run from 1pm to 6pm every day expect Tuesday, when it will
run from 8am to 1pm.

There is currently a critical need for blood, and it is being
distributed to hospitals as quickly as it is being donated. Please
donate at our drive next week, and if your Department, Lab, or Center
has any new people for the summer, please encourage them to come along,
as new donors are the only way to improve supplies for years to come.

The Red Cross is offering an opportunity to complete the reading and
health questionnaire from the comfort of your home or office, which is
supposed to save you around 15 minutes at the drive itself. To do this,
visit http://www.redcrossblood.org/rapidpass, but be aware of several
caveats: 1) this *must* be done the same day as your donation 2) You will
need to be able to show a copy of your form (either emailed to yourself,
or printed) at the drive 3) MIT's drives are located in zip code 02139

The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To make
an appointment, fill out the form at:

	http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/

If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
drive and donate anyway.

We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're encouraged to
donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
shortly before the drive starts.

Blood Donation Factoids:

  * Drink extra fluids before your donation. You can begin to drink extra
fluids the day before your donation. Water and juices are great, but
try to avoid a lot of caffeine.

  * Only about 3% of the U.S. population donates blood. Yet every 2
seconds, someone needs it. *You* are the #MissingType. The _meric_n
Red Cr_ss needs your help to bring back the As, Bs, & Os. These
are more than just letters -- they're blood types & they do go
    missing from hospital shelves.

appropriate box when making an appointment, or fill out the form at
