I wanted to remind everyone that there is a blood drive at MIT this week
(Monday through Thursday). To make an appointment please go to

I also wanted to call out that we are always looking for volunteers to
help out at the drive. Having just two volunteers at the drive at any
given time can speed up the donating process for all donors. Please

if you'd like to sign up for one or more hour-long shifts. If you

The Red Cross is offering an opportunity to complete the reading and
health questionnaire from the comfort of your home or office, which is
supposed to save you around 15 minutes at the drive itself. To do this,
visit http://www.redcrossblood.org/rapidpass, but be aware of several
caveats: 1) this *must* be done the same day as your donation 2) It
cannot be done from a phone, a desktop/laptop is required 3) You will
need to be able to show a copy of your form (either emailed to yourself,
or printed) at the drive 4) MIT's drives are located in zip code 02139

Please allow me to begin by thanking everyone who took the time to
donate or volunteer at our June drive.
There will be a blood drive at MIT on Monday 9/19 through Thursday 9/22,
in La Sala in the Student Center. The drive will run from 1pm to 6pm
every day but Tuesday, when it will run from 8am to 1pm.

The Red Cross is already seeing a drop in the blood supply as fewer
people donate of the summer (much of the blood supply in our area comes
from high school and college blood drives), and more injuries due to
out-door activities create an increased demand. Please take the time to
save a life or three (each pint of donated blood can help up to three
people) by donating blood.
Welcome back to everyone who was away for the summer; and just plain
welcome to new students, staff, and faculty. We're always looking for
new donors to replace the ones who've graduated. Word of mouth is
quite helpful in this process. If you work or live with or near someone
(or several someones) who is/are new to campus, please ask them to
consider donating, or encourage them to just come in with you.

The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To make
an appointment, fill out the form at:

If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
drive and donate anyway.
We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're encouraged to
donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
shortly before the drive starts.
Blood Donation Factoids:
* Be sure to eat! Don't skip breakfast or lunch on the day of your
blood donation. Your body will need extra energy to donate a pint
of blood. You will also feel better after donating if you have
eaten a meal a few hours before.
* Bone marrow transplant, on average, requires one - two units of
red blood cells every other day for two - four weeks and six -
eight units of platelets daily (or one - two units of apheresis
platelets) for four - six weeks.
