I wanted to remind everyone that there is a blood drive going on at MIT
this week. We're also still looking for a few more volunteers. Please
add yourself to the schedule at
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmKvHy3ldDAQdEl5M09kV0Q5VjJSZHd2SUZ6ZGl6S0E#gid=0
if you'd like to help.

In late breaking news we've teamed up with AMSA (http://amsa.mit.edu/)
and SAMAR (South Asian Marrow Association of Recruiters) to run a bone
marrow donor registration drive concurrently with the blood drive on
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Please note there are a number of differences between donating blood and
joining the bone marrow registry. Joining the bone marrow donor
registry only requires a cheek swab, and you only need to do it once.
Additionally, restrictions on bone marrow donations are more lax than
those for blood donations, so you may be able to join the bone marrow
registry even if you are not eligible to donate blood. People with
leukemia, lymphomas, and other terminal diseases search the registry for
matches; only 4 out of 10 patients in need of a lifesaving transplant
receive one. By having potential donors join the registry, we can save
many lives! If you want to join the registry, but are not eligible to
donate blood, feel free to stop by the blood drive on Wednesday,
Thursday or Friday. Just let the registration desk know that you are
only interested in the bone marrow *before* signing in (since you get to
skip that step...and most of the others).

Subject: Blood Drive at MIT...2/25 - 3/1; "Lunch Pack"

Executive Summary: There will be a blood drive at MIT from Monday 2/25
Through Friday 3/1, in La Sala in the Student Center. The drive will
run from 1pm to 6pm every day but Tuesday, when it will run from 8am to
1pm. Please use http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/ to make an
appointment for faster service. All donors at our February drive will
receive a coupon for a free lunch pack at Cumberland Farms, which
includes a burger or grilled chicken sandwich, any size fountain soda or
frozen beverage, and a bag of chips.

Hello,

Please allow me to begin by thanking everyone who took the time to
donate or volunteer at our November drive. We collected over 175 units
of blood despite not having a two-day drive right before Thanksgiving.
On behalf of the Red Cross, thank you for saving lives.

The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at MIT from Monday 2/25
Through Friday 3/1, in La Sala in the Student Center. The drive will
run from 1pm to 6pm every day but Tuesday, when it will run from 8am to
1pm. All donors at our February drive will receive a coupon for a free
lunch pack at Cumberland Farms, which includes a burger or grilled
chicken sandwich, any size fountain soda or frozen beverage, and a bag
of chips.

Word of mouth is one of the best ways to get people to donate blood for
the first time (or after a long absence.) When you donate this winter,
please consider asking a friend to come donate with you. You'll have
someone to talk to at the drive, and the Red Cross will collect more
life-saving blood. Everyone wins!

The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To make
an appointment, fill out the form at:

	http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/

If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
drive and donate anyway.

We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're encouraged to
donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
shortly before the drive starts.

Blood Donation Factoids:

  * Meat, fish, sunflower seeds, and dark-green leafy vegetables are
all high in iron, and can be eaten on a regular basis to raise
    your blood-iron level.

  * You can donate blood every 56 days. The average healthy person will
be eligible to give blood more than 330 times in his or her
    lifetime.

If you want to forward this message, feel free as long as you are
sending it to a friend, or to a list for which it is appropriate. In
other words, feel free to forward, but please don't spam people on our
behalf. If anyone wants to get on our mailing list they can check the
appropriate box when making an appointment, or fill out the form at
