Hi APO,
I recently went to the MIT Community Service Fair and found a bunch of
groups with interesting projects. Below I've listed a few potential
projects. If you are interested in attending or PCing one of these
projects, please let me know!
The Esplanade Association - Drop-in Saturdays start on March 9th (9-12:30)
I haven't been on a project before, but it sounds like it is sort of like
the Charles River Conservancy. We would be cutting shrubs/painting
benches/etc.
Rosie's place - time/day TBD
Rosie's place is an elegant shelter/soup kitchen/advocacy group for poor
and homeless women. They are located in south Boston and need help serving
meals.
Prospect Hill Academy - two Saturdays a month (9-12)
The academy is a K-12 charter school near central square that needs help
with tutoring. If you've ever tutored a neighbor or sibling, it sounds like
it would be sort of like that. This group requires prior registration and
something like a background check because you'll be working with children
so if you are interested you should definitely let me know soon.
I would also like to put out a plug for coming up with another service
project to do as a chapter. It is awesome that we help out with other
group's service projects, but I think it would be fun to organize one as a
chapter. One idea I've been thinking of is some sort of drive for
food/blankets/books/anything for a disaster area. Many areas that were
effected by disasters years ago continue to need help. We could place boxes
in department offices and dorms in order to make donating easier for MIT
students. If you are interested in doing something like this or have
another idea please let me know!
YiLFS,
-Alex
