Executive Summary: There will be a blood drive at MIT from Monday 7/9
through Friday 7/13, in La Sala in the Student Center. The drive will
run from noon to 6pm every day except Tuesday, and 8am to 2pm then.
These are extended hours due a critical need for blood. Please use
http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/ to make an appointment for faster
service. All donors at our July drive will receive a coupon for
Friendly's ice cream and a chance to enter a raffle for Red Sox tickets.
Hello,
Please allow me to begin by thanking everyone who took the time to
donate or volunteer at our February drive. We collected 161 units of
blood, which is not too bad for a short drive at the end of the term.
On behalf of the Red Cross, thank you for saving lives.
The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at MIT from Monday 7/9
through Friday 7/13, in La Sala in the Student Center. The drive will
run from noon to 6pm every day except Tuesday, when it will run from 8am
to 2pm. Please note the extended hours. All donors at our July drive
will receive a coupon for free Friendly's ice cream and a chance to
enter a raffle for Red Sox tickets.
The summer is normally a time when fewer people donate blood (because
schools are out for the summer) and more people need it (because more
people are injured in outdoor activities), but this year is worse than
most. The American Red Cross has issued an EMERGENCY need for blood and
platelet donors of all blood types. In June, blood donations are down
more than 10 percent across the country, with 50,000 fewer pints of
blood than expected. There is almost half the amount of readily
available blood in the Red Cross inventory than there was this time last
year. Please come donate, and please bring a friend if you are able.
The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To
make an appointment, fill out the form at:
http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/
If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
drive and donate anyway.
We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're encouraged to
donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
shortly before the drive starts.
Blood Donation Factoids:
* No strenuous exercise before or after donating. If you exercise
before donating, be sure to drink even more fluids to replace what you
lost during your work out.
* An adult body contains 10-12 pints of blood.
If you want to forward this message, feel free as long as you are

behalf. If anyone wants to get on our mailing list they can check the
appropriate box when making an appointment, or fill out the form at
