SERVICE NEWSLETTER
*18 June, 2009*
A Midsummer's Newsletter
*What's Been Going On?*
*
I miss my brothers, *you may be thinking. *We don't have chapter meetings
anymore and people aren't hanging out in the office as much.
Summer's flying by and I feel like I'm out of the loop. I know we've had
some projects, but I was busy and I don't even see the people who went so I
don't hear about them, and I really miss the Apoc too...*
Well, lucky you, there's a summer Apoc in the works. For those of you in
Cambridge, make sure to save the date for the summer barbecue on Sunday
6/28! And here's a service newsletter winking cheerily in your inbox.
On the Service front, we had thirteen brothers, undergrads and alumni,
attending at least part of *Afterfinals*, our amazing week-long project at
Camp Resolute. From fixing up the rifle range to digging four foot deep
post holes, it was a great week of fresh air, bonding, and work. I'm sure
you'll hear all about it at the barbecue and through the Apoc.
The same day that Afterfinals returned, seven brothers participated as a
team in the huge City Year *Serve-a-thon*. Volunteers swarmed to service
sites all over Boston. We helped a tiny community center by clearing its
overgrown yard slope to make way for ivy.
Senior Week *BookEx* Dropoff continued the popularity of BookEx. We had one
person with a cartload of over 50 textbooks! The books aren't so bad when
they're stacked nicely. And in fall dropoff we'll be getting many more!
Congratulations to the recently graduated seniors! APO brothers were
trained for and volunteered both at the hooding ceremony, where we all did
disability services, and at *Commencement*.
Last weekend, APO brothers hosted a booth showing of science, engineering
and technology to high school girl scouts at *SET in the City*. We then
traveled to Harvard, ate lunch with the girls and observed them doing
hands-on activities.

*Coming Up Next
*
I just sent mail about *Unity Day*, Sat 6/27, where we can join PMD in
facepainting and sandart with kids at a housing development's summer
celebration. Email me and Lori (lori@pmd.org) asap if you would like to
help out.
Something big is in the works. Rebecca and I are working with LEM and some
environmentally-minded students at MIT to bring *B-SAFE*, a summer program
for kids, to MIT to learn about environmental stewardship. It looks like we
may be running up to 10 3-hour sessions over the course of the summer, and
these sessions are going to need some volunteer manpower. More information
will be forthcoming when we have dates. Contact Rebecca (rkw@mit.edu) if
you want more information or if you have ideas.
I will be out of town from 6/29 to 6/13, and I will be without email for
approximately that first week. But service must go on! I'll be giving some
tasks to ServComm, but if *YOU* have an idea for a project to *PC* this
summer, this would be a great time. Email me about it now or this coming
week and I'll help you set it up before I leave.
For example:
Do you want to PC a trip to *World's End* (T and bus accessible, but
distant) to pick up trash by the beautiful ocean, hike around in the park,
and have a fresh *picnic* under the sun? Fellowship and service unite!
Do you want to PC a project to serve up dinner at *Pine Street Inn *homeless
shelter?
Do you want to PC a Saturday project to *sort books* to send to universities
in Iraq?
Let me know if these are interesting to you! Or, if you want to PC
something but don't know what, let's talk and we can come up with a bunch of
options.
*Fall Sneak Preview
*This is your chance to nab a really cool PCship in the first month of term
before you get too hosed. The weekend of 9/26, we will be helping Sue Coney
and *Camp Wanocksett*, 2 hours away, *teaching* a *science* event. This
shouldn't require as much planning as a Chapter Weekend, but it would
involve being on the ball with transportation. Talk to alums! Try a cool
new service location! Science and kids! Sound like fun? Let me know.
