UNIQUE COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

SAT 2/7 Blue Lobster Bowl

WHAT Staff the 2009 Blue Lobster Bowl:
        Foster enthusiasm for learning by
        keeping time, keeping score, and
        judging rules*

WHEN Competition:
Saturday, February 7, 7:30 AM to 3 PM

Required PMD Training: Saturday, January 31
        New Volunteers: 12-2:30 PM
        Returning Volunteers: 2-3:30 PM

WHERE M.I.T., Cambridge

WHY Support young people who are interested in
and knowledgeable about the natural world
by staffing the National Ocean Sciences Bowl
        "Blue Lobster Bowl" regional competition,
        a fast-paced, one-day competition among
16 high school teams from MA. Topics include
        the biology, chemistry, geology, physics,
history, and economics of the ocean as
well as ocean-related current events. The
winning team will compete in the nationals
in Washington, DC. For more info, visit
        http://www.nosb.org

This is a fun, fast-paced project with which
nearly 200 PMD volunteers have helped with
these and other critical roles since 1999.
Each volunteer will receive a free t-shirt,
        lunch, and parking if needed.

        Volunteers need NO science/ocean knowledge,
just keen attention to detail, positive
attitudes toward all competitors and schools,
and attentive patience during down times
        while questions are being challenged/graded
        and between rounds.

We need 20 more volunteers to keep time,
keep score, and judge rules* for
seven rounds (3 round robin + 4 elimination
and practice rounds) that precede the
3-4 trophy rounds (after 3 pm, which will
need 4 experienced volunteers who can
        stay until ~6pm if necessary-see Q#11 below).

To prepare, all PMD volunteers MUST ATTEND
a training session so they are able to
function without errors in all expected
        capacities during this high-intensity
competition. (Even if you have volunteered
for or participated in NOSB or another quiz
bowl in the past, you must participate
in training on 1/31 in order to familiarize
yourself with current rules & regulations
and to demonstrate your mastery of these
        roles.)

The 2009 Blue Lobster Bowl has returning co-
organizers at MIT Ocean Engineering and
Sea Grant, and PMD will continue to train
and to support PMD volunteers before and
        during the competition.

*Only experienced volunteers will serve as
        rules judges.

HOW Get involved! We need 20 more volunteers
to run this competition. Please sign up only
when you can definitely commit to both the project
and a training session. Please use this registration
        link
https://alum.mit.edu/smarTrans/register-login.vm?eventID=28882&groupID=146
