I just wanted to remind everyone that there will be a blood drive at
MIT next week. Please take the time to save a life. Additionally, we
are particularly short on volunteers to help staff the drive.
Additional volunteers will help make the drive run faster for
everyone. If you are interested in volunteering, even if it is just
for an hour, please drop a note to blood-drive-coordinators with your
availability.

Hello,
Please allow me to begin by thanking everyone who made our June
drive a success. We collected over 250 units of blood. On behalf of
the Red Cross, thank you for saving lives.
The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at MIT from Monday,
September 8 through Wednesday, September 10, and on Friday, September
12, in La Sala in the Student Center. The drive will run from noon to
6pm every day except Tuesday, when it will run from 8am to 2pm. The
drive will be closed on Thursday. All donors and volunteers will get
a free College Tour blood drive t-shirt. Donors will also be able to
enter in a regional raffle for Red Sox tickets. By giving blood, or
volunteering your time at the blood drive, you can help save lives.
Every fall we need to find a new set of regular donors to replace the
ones who graduated and left the previous spring. Word of mouth has
always been the best way to do this. Please bring a friend when you
com to donate, especially if they are someone who is new to the
community and may be interested in becoming a regular donor. Please
also note that in the region, most blood types are at low or critical
levels, and we need extra donors to help make up the difference.
The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To
make an appointment, fill out the form at:
http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/
If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
drive and donate anyway.
We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're encouraged to
donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
shortly before the drive starts.
Blood Donation Factoids:
* Meat, fish, sunflower seeds, and dark-green leafy vegetables are
all high in iron, and can be eaten on a regular basis to raise
your blood-iron level.
* In the United States, a blood transfusion is needed about every two
seconds.
