Executive Summary: There will be a blood drive at MIT from Monday,
December 10, through Thursday, December 13, in La Sala in the Student
Center. The drive will run from noon to 6pm on Monday and Thursday
and from 8am to 2pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. All donors and
volunteers will get a free Patriots blood drive t-shirt and free
pizza. Please use http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/ to make an
appointment for faster service. We do expect Monday to be popular so
it is more important than usual to make an appointment.
Hello,
Please allow me to begin by thanking everyone who made our September
drive a success. We collected 328 pints of blood. On behalf of the
Red Cross, thank you for saving lives.
After several scheduling snafus, we've scheduled the next blood drive
at MIT. The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at MIT from from
Monday, December 10, through Thursday, December 13, in La Sala in the
Student Center. The drive will run from noon to 6pm on Monday and
Thursday, and from 8am to 2pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. All donors
and volunteers will get a free Patriots blood drive t-shirt and free
pizza. By giving blood, or volunteering your time at the blood drive,
you can help save lives.
As the holidays approach, it is particularly important to make sure
the blood supply is kept up to necessary levels. Please give the gift
of life this holiday season. Please note that we do expect some days
of the drive to fill, especially Monday and possibly Thursday. Please
be sure to make an appointment if possible. We will post notes on the
appointment web page about how busy we expect various days to be.
For those of you who have graduated or left MIT in the last year , but
will be staying in the area and recently learned that your MIT email
address will be going away, please be sure to subscribe your new
address to our mailing list. You can do this by checking the "Email
Updates" box when making your appointment, or by simply filling out
our mailing list registration form at
http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/email.html
The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To
make an appointment, fill out the form at:
http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/
If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
drive and donate anyway.
We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're welcome to
donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
shortly before the drive starts.
Blood Donation Factoids:
* Drink extra fluids before your donation. You can begin to drink extra
fluids the day before your donation. Water and juices are great, but
try to avoid a lot of caffeine.
* One donation could help up to three people. For instance, a
patient with acute blood loss resulting from trauma or surgery (red
blood cells), an individual with leukemia (platelets) and someone
who has had a liver transplant (plasma).
