Hi,
I wanted to remind everyone about the Blood Drive at MIT this week.
Additionally, I wanted to let everyone know that we will also be
running a Bone Marrow Registration drive at the same time as the blood
drive, but that you can participate in either one without
participating with the other.
Finally, I wanted to warn folks that we already have a lot of
appointments for Monday. If things get too bad, we may have to ask
walk-in donors to come back later in the week. If you are going to
try to walk in tomorrow, 3-4 currently looks like the best bet, and
any other time after 2:30 is the second choice.

Subject: Blood Drive at MIT...9/17-21; t-shirt, pizza, Bone Marrow Reg.
Executive Summary: There will be a blood drive at MIT from Monday,
September 17, through Friday, September 21, in La Sala in the Student
Center. The drive will run from noon to 6pm every day except Thursday
when it will run from 8am to 2pm. All donors and volunteers will get
a free Red Sox blood drive t-shirt and free pizza. Please use
http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/ to make an appointment for faster
service. We expect to have bone marrow donor registration available
at part of the drive, but are not yet sure when. The bone marrow
donor registration and blood donation processes are completely
separate and you can participate in either one without the other.
Hello,
Please allow me to begin by thanking everyone who made our June
drive a success. We collected 262 pints of blood. On behalf of the
Red Cross, thank you for saving lives.
The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at MIT from from Monday
September 17, through Friday, September 21, in La Sala in the Student
Center. The drive will run from noon to 6pm every day, except
Thursday, when it will run from 8am to 2pm. All donors and volunteers
will get a free "Red Sox Nation Donate Blood" t-shirt and free pizza.
By giving blood, or volunteering your time at the blood drive, you can
help save lives.
The most effective way for us to get new donors is for existing donors
to bring a friend with them. Please consider bringing a friend (or
several) to donate when you come in. We're particularly interested in
seen new members of the MIT community.
In addition, we expect to be offering registration in the national
bone marrow registry. The exact schedule for this has not been
confirmed, but more information will be sent once it has. Bone marrow
donor registration is a simple process that requires only a cheek
swab, and can be done regardless of whether you donate blood.
The Red Cross relies on appointments to decide how many staff to
provide on a given day. Making appointments will decrease your wait,
and make the drive run faster as a whole (even if you can only tell us
what day you want to donate, and not what time during the day.) To
make an appointment, fill out the form at:
http://web.mit.edu/blood-drive/www/
If you cannot make an appointment please feel free to come to the
drive and donate anyway.
We can always use more volunteers to help out during the drive to get
people registered quickly and take some of the pressure off the Red
Cross workers. Even if you can't donate blood, you're welcome to
donate some of your time to the drive. Some of the services that
volunteers may perform are registering donors, staffing the canteen,
and providing moral support to the donors. No previous experience is
necessary to volunteer. All these efforts are important to the
drive's success. To volunteer, send e-mail to
blood-drive-coordinators@mit.edu, and someone will reply to you
shortly before the drive starts.
Blood Donation Factoids:
* Be sure to eat! Don't skip breakfast or lunch on the day of your
blood donation. Your body will need extra energy to donate a pint of
blood. You will also feel better after donating if you have eaten a
meal a few hours before.
* In the United States, a blood transfusion is needed about every two
seconds.
