May I suggest my W3A proposal? It is an API: every `applet' consists
of a few compiled functions and is dynamically loaded by the central
browser. There are 5 types of applets: agent, filter, viewer,
printer-driver, and accessory.
Advantages: applets are small, can be distributed in binary, are easy
to write.
Disadvantages: no support for interpreted languages yet (but a Python
interface is likely to be developed)
External viewers a la Mosaic are already supported, by means of a
90-line applet. M-CCI could be supported in the same way.
