I am struggling right now with reading a record-oriented format (library 
MARC records) on a system that *is* record-oriented (VMS) but does not know 
about this particular format.  My suspicion is that you need in the OS both 
the low-level, UNIX-style byte stream file access as well as a higher-level 
record-oriented file access format for maximum data access at maximum speed. 
 A compiled language for record access (like Perl's pack()/unpack() only 
much more sophisticated) would be nice too...
