Subject: Windows 3.1 user wants to get warped. Is there any advantage?

Dear MIT Warped Advocates:

I am a professor at Georgia Tech and have recently become very excited
about OS/2, but am afraid of switching my operating system because I
can't get a straight answer about some very basic memory questions from
my Information Technology Center because the entire school has gone
Macintosh and the consultants know next to nothing about PCs, much less
about OS/2.

I hope that you will be able to give me an answer to this very basic
question about OS/2 and its benefits for Windows 3.1 programs. Since
OS/2 is so streamlined in its design and only takes up 4MB memory, what
happens to this advantage when one runs Windows 3.1 applications under
OS/2? Since Windows 3.1 when run under DOS requires 8MB memory, will
the memory required for getting "warped" and using my Windows 3.1 with
OS/2 be additive? In other words, do I lose in fact one of the most crucial
benefits of OS/2 if I keep using Windows 3.1 programs? Will I need 4 + 8 =12
whopping MBs of RAM to run such a system? Will my 3.1 programs prove to be
more stable under OS/2 than they are under DOS (where they crash all the time,
especially if more than 3 large programs are open at one time)?

I would appreciate any guidance you can offer to someone who
understands that OS/2 is truly the right choice for the future but who
is also concerned to be able to continue using some of the productivity
tools that I am used to from Windows. Can you help me make a rational
choice about this issue? I have talked to IBM directly, but they seem
to waffle on the memory usage when combining OS/2 and Windows 3.1
applications.

Can you please help? It's very hard to get information from my
university because of its almost exclusively Macintosh orientation. I
have turned to the Web pages in desperation. Please help!
