I don't know if John used the site-init.el from the Emacs 19 locker, but if
he did, it has the Athena-specific hack of trying to autosave in /usr/tmp.
If there is not a compatability symlink, this will fail. I don't know if
that's the problem---I can't check it out from here. (Yet :-)
