Are you sure you had both the new kernel and the new libafs in place?
That is, you saw a FIELD-OF-DREAMS identifier when the kernel booted,
and a 1.21 identifier when your system loaded AFS, and it crashed?

(I've been using what I know to be an up-to-date kernel and AFS on
limekiller, and it doesn't crash, so this is curious.)

(Incidentally, we don't have the old revision of the kernel source
tree around, sorry.)
