Okay, it's time to order the system. It turns out a lot of companies
will not deliver in less than 4/5 weeks, but from the ones left
over, ZEOS seems like a good bet. The following is basically the system:
Pentium 90
256K local cache
48 Megs or 64 Megs of RAM (64 will push us a little over budget,
but comments on whether we should go for it or not will be appreciated).
Buslogic PCI SCSI controller.
The network card will be ordered seperately unless we choose one that
ZEOS can ship (or whoever we end up ordering from). Currently, I'm still
being told that one with the Lance Ethernet chip will be a good deal, but
nobody has named a brand-name card that carries that (i.e. Lance Ethernet
means nothing to the sales reps wherever I call).
If we can't get that, it's a toss between 3C509 or SMC Ultra Elite 16.
I'm a little concerned about the SMC, as I don't know of any systems here
that use it... Any comments (relevant things are speed, especially under
high load).
thanks for your comments..
