X/vt hosage on granola

At least three times in the past few days, possibly more,
granola's dm and X have gotten confused.

Specifically, X seems to go away (a cursor may be observed in the
upper-left of the otherwise blank screen), but the X server continues
to run, and needs a kill -9 to go away.

Starting another X server on another vt causes X to start up
again, but you still cannot switch vts with Ctrl-Alt.

There doesn't seem to be a way around this condition, except
to reboot granola.

I suspect that this relates to the new W32 server that jtkohl
installed, but I'd rather wait for him to get back from his
vacation this week before reverting...
