well, that could well have been my problem with rlogin yesterday (it
said something like message integrity error).  The telnet problem was
due to Clearly Bogus(tm) code in the telnetd which thinks that what you
type is not protected unless it's encrypted in both directions.  There
was additional bogosity which is timing related that it sometimes
doesn't tell you that--it drops the connection too quickly sometimes
(this could be the same bug as the "FTP server bug" that Charles Hannum
fixed in -current?).
