The afsd core dump was probably a case of afs failing to load and the
syscall(210) causing SIGSYS.

% gdb /usr/vice/etc/afsd afsd.core 
(no debugging symbols found)...Core was generated by `afsd'.
Program terminated with signal 12, Bad system call.

I'll look at the mod time stuff sometime soon. (looks like a generic AFS
layer problem--the BSD wrapper just calls the AFS layer).
