  I have machines where AFs hangs that don't have either of
those problems.

  so, I'm not sure why, but the one I had here which had the problem
had >8G HD, which meant that even the NFS install was unhappy until
I went in and by hand did my own disklabel which ignored LBA.


  I may have had an exception here, but whatever  :)
  (in the meanwhile, the NFS install floppy appears to work well,
we should seriously consider doing our installs that way)
