This isn't happening any more. Perhaps the other discuss
change fixed it, or perhaps I saw some insane situation, but I can't
get it to do it after rebuilding with the your discuss patches.

Turns out to not be a new or platform-specific problem. I can
reproduce it on Athena suns and SGIs and other SIPB-Athena Linux and
NetBSD systems by just running "dsgrep" and waiting a while.
Oh, and this time I was patient enough to build TeX. It seems
to work.
